A few words about recent releases / reviews:

Apart from where they are included in articles on this website, I don't have a 'Reviews' section for a number of reasons:

  • I receive so many requests to review recordings it is impossible to include them all.

  • Unlike some publications/blogs, Sandy Brown Jazz is not a funded website and it is not possible to pay reviewers.

  • Reviews tend to be personal opinions, something a reviewer likes might not suit you, or vice versa.

  • It is difficult to capture music in words, so much better to be able to listen and see whether the music interests you.

For these reasons in particular I just include a selection of recent recordings below where I share the notes issued by the musician(s) as an introduction and links to samples so you can 'taste' the music for yourselves. For those who like to read reviews, these, of course, can be checked out on other sites.

Some albums are priced in dollars or other currencies. These are marked ^. There are currency options if you  proceed to order. Recordings are now regularly available on different formats (CD, mp3 downloads, vinyl) or platforms e.g iTunes, Spotify, etc. I am unable to list them all so it is worth checking if you have a favourite platform).

Brigitte Beraha Teasing Reflections.jpg

'This is Brigitte Beraha's third release with her band of Lucid Dreamers. Drawing from the jazz, folk, contemporary classical, free improv and electronic realms, here you will find poignant songs, atmospheric and open improvisations, exciting grooves and impactful stillness. The album's new music is a meeting of chamber and electronic worlds through Brigitte's compositions and improvisations from the quartet, performed with passion, creativity and humour. Its themes tackle the absurdity and the beauty of words, how much of the future is already written and the meaning and importance of our lives on this earth.' (album notes)

John Butcher & John Edwards - This Is Not Speculation
(Fundacja Sluchaj) - Released: 1st August 2025

John Butcher (saxophone); John Edwards (bass)

John Butcher John Edwards This Is Not Speculation.jpg

'Since their first meeting - a trio with Pat Thomas in 1997, Butcher and Edwards have found playing together to be particularly inspiring. Their debut duo was at the FMP Total Music Meeting in 1999 and their most recent outing at the Horse Club in London in 2025. They have played in many combinations, with musicians such as Okkyung Lee, Chris Burn, Fabrizio Spera, Thurston Moore and Claudia Molitor. Two trios have been a particular focus: Last Dream of The Morning with Mark Sanders and The Apophonics with Gino Robair. "Between Butcher's extreme timbral flexibility and Edwards' extended bowing techniques, there are moments when the otherworldly keening or doleful muttering combine to make sounds that could have come from just about any other instrument. At times the two players seem to be locked together, both playing their instruments with a single brain; at others, they seem to be almost ignoring each other. Butcher and Edwards are masters of their craft." (All Music Guide - Rick Anderson)  (album notes)

Fred Hersch - The Surrounding Green

(ECM Records) - Released:   27th June 2025

Fred Hersch (piano); Drew Gress (bass); Joey Baron (drums)

Fred Hersch The Surrounding Green.jpg

'Masterful trio interplay reliant on deeply honed three-way communication and a refined sense of understatement make Fred Hersch’s third recording for ECM an essential entry into the piano trio canon. Hersch tackles a handful of 20th century compositions – spanning from standards to less frequented jazz tunes – as well as three originals ....... Fred’s own pieces are striking in their lyrical intensity, beaming with elaborate harmonies and interwoven counterpoint on “Plainsong”, timeless melodic invention on the title track “The Surrounding Green” and irresistible Latin groove on “Anticipation”. The trio’s pass at Ornette Coleman’s “Law Years” is a post-free swinging affair, while Egberto Gismonti’s “Palhaço” offers an elegant journey of thoughtful trio interaction. And on the Gershwin brothers’ “Embraceable You”, the pianist and his accompanists boast infectious nonchalance. Dedicated to the haunting quality of a melancholy melody, the trio also explores Charlie Haden’s “The First Song”. The late bassist appeared on one of Fred’s earliest studio dates in 1987, also with Baron on drums. Their intimate bond with the song is apparent throughout, making for a particularly stirring interpretation.' (album notes)

Festival Peak describes Nori as “a five-person gift from Austin, TX.” 'Walking Foot’ is a patchwork of stories told from various generational perspectives. PlainsPeak - Someone To Someone
(Irrabagast Records) - Released: 15th August 2025

Jon Irabagon (alto saxophone); Russ Johnson (trumpet); Clark Sommers (acoustic bass); Dana Hall (drums)

PlainsPeak Someone To Someone.jpg

'Chicago-based composer, bandleader, saxophonist and label-owner Jon Irabagon and PlainsPeak release a love letter to Chicago. The Windy City (as it is also known) isthe third-most-populous metropolitan area in the United States. The City of Broad Shoulders (as it is also known) has made notable contributions to urban planning and zoning standards, was a major player in the City Beautiful Movement and also highlights ingenious underground tunnels connecting to Lake Michigan to smuggle booze and alcohol evading law enforcement during the Prohibition era. Trapdoors at the end of some of these tunnels lead directly to the Green Mill, one of the world’s legendary and longest-running jazz clubs with a historic connection to organized crime. Once co-owned by a minion of Al Capone, the club to this day maintains an “Al Capone seat”— the only place in the joint that can spy every exit at all times...... (album notes)

Yao’s lyrical soloing and expressive, round tone, combined with his relentless drive to push the boundaries of harmony and rhythm, have established him as a unique and forward-thinking jazz talent. He has been called “one of New York’s elite trombonists and is also a first-class, ambitious, and witty composer and leader” (Lucid Culture) and his compositions are described as “boldly diverse, Yao’s compositions cut across the swath of contemporary jazz’s field” (All About Jazz). In 2023, Yao earned a place in the Rising Star Trombone and Rising Star Big Band categories in the DownBeat Critics Poll. He has built an extensive body of work, collaborating with ensembles and performers worldwide and releasing five recordings as a bandleader—each showcasing his bold, boundary-pushing compositions for both small groups and big bands. Her trio with Jan Roder and Kay Lübke was formed in 2006, with Eberhard's history with the two musicians going back to the mid-nineties. The intense relationship between the three can be heard in every note. The trio moves in the proud tradition of saxophone jazz trios and plays its own, highly original compositions. Their art inspires with musical mastery, improvisational intensity, wit and charm, while forging strong accents through mutual trust and the band's particular sound. "The trio play her complex and varied pieces with aplomb and offhand virtuosity. At the same time they capture an explosive, rail-against-the-limits quality", ..... (album notes)

Reissues

Louis Stewart - I Thought About You

 (Livia Recordings) - Released:   29th May 2025

Louis Stewart (guitar); John Taylor (piano); Sam Jones (bass); Billy Higgins (drums)

Louis Stewart I Thought About You.jpg

'I Thought About You is a major re-issue, a remixed and remastered release of Louis Stewart’s quartet album with John Taylor, Sam Jones and Billy Higgins.I It was recorded when Louis was working in Ronnie Scott’s band, as was John Taylor, coinciding with Cedar Walton’s quartet performance at the club. Louis was so enthralled by Cedar’s bassist Sam Jones, and drummer Billy Higgins, that he invited them to record with him, along with John Taylor. Originally recorded in 1977, and released in 1980 with some edits and overdubs, this impeccable version restores the original London recording and adds two extra tracks (CD only). The results are possibly the best Louis Stewart studio recording, with top level accompaniment from the brilliant supporting trio.' (album notes)

Joe 'King' Oliver - A Career Anthology 1923-31
(Acrobat Records) - Released:  2025 [5 CDs]

King Oliver (cornet, trumpet, bandleader) with various personnel

Joe King Oliver anthology.jpg

'Joe ‘King’ Oliver was an American cornetist and trumpeter and bandleader, as well as an influential composer, who was one of the true pioneers of early jazz during the 1920s and into the ‘30s – Louis Armstrong, for whom he was a mentor, said of him “if it had not been for Joe Oliver, jazz would not be what it is today”. Born in Louisiana in the 1880s, he learnt his trade in New Orleans marching bands and during WWI moved to Chicago, which became the primary centre of recorded jazz. This 126-track 5-CD collection comprises a significant proportion of his career recordings leading his own bands or as a member of other leaders’ bands and accompanying singers where he made an important contribution. It includes some of the most significant and influential recordings made during this era, through to the end of his active recording career in 1931 occasioned by dental and mouth problems that affected his ability to play. There are recordings on the Gennett, Okeh, Columbia, Paramount, Autograph, Vocalion, Brunswick, QRS and Victor labels, featuring recordings with his Creole Jazz Band, Dixie Syncopators, Savannah Syncopators, his Jazz Band and his Orchestra. It also includes recordings with Butterbeans & Susie, Irene Scruggs, Sippi Wallace, Ida Cox, Victoria Spivey, Katherine Henderson, Irene Gibson and Texas Alexander, and with the Clarence Williams Novelty Four, with performances alongside Louis Armstrong, Baby Dodds, Lil Armstrong, Jimmy Noone, Clarence Williams, Barney Bigard and many other top names. It’s a comprehensive showcase for one of the genre’s most important personalities.' (album notes)

Herb Geller European Rebirth.jpg

'Los Angeles native Herb Geller (1928-2017) was an accomplished and respected alto saxophonist who started his professional career in the late 1940s, influenced by Charlie Parker. He recorded with such leaders as Earle Spencer, Claude Thornhill, Stan Kenton, Billy May, Shorty Rogers, Bill Holman, Clifford Brown, Maynard Ferguson, Marty Paich and the whole West Coast clique. In 1958 his life turned upside down. While on tour with Benny Goodman, he got news that his young wife, pianist Lorraine Geller had died. They had been married and performing together for seven years, and had high hopes for their future jazz careers. Her unexpected death hit Geller hard, and he dug in to forget. He went on two more tours with Benny Goodman, the last of them to South America under the aegis of the U.S. State Department, and upon his return he played many gigs on the West Coast. But sadness lingered. Finally, Geller decided to find himself, and like Dexter Gordon, Kenny Clarke and a host of other jazz musicians who embraced the expatriate life —he moved to Europe in March 1962..........' Larry Stabbins, Keith Tippett, Louis Moholo-Moholo - Live In Foggiaa

(Ogun Records) - Released:  25th July 2025

Larry Stabbins (tenor and soprano saxophones, flute); Keith Tippett (piano and voice); Louis Moholo-Moholo (drums, voice, bass)

Stabbins Tippett Moholo Live In Foggia.jpg

'Recorded in Italy in 1985, this is a valuable record of a unique trio playing at the very top of their game. Larry Stabbins, after years of playing with many of the greatest improvising musicians of the 60s and 70s (John Stevens, Chris McGregor, Keith Tippett, Mike Westbrook, Tony Oxley etc) had recently exploded onto the pop world with the bands Weekend and Working Week and was quite famous in Italy. Not to be outdone, Louis Moholo-Moholo turned up to this gig in full ‘warpaint’ and all three play like the clappers. Both Louis and Keith are in their prime here, and the level of playing by all three is off the scale.' (album notes)
