A few words about recent releases / reviews:

Apart from where they are included in articles on this website, I don't have a 'Reviews' section for a number of reasons:

  • I receive so many requests to review recordings it is impossible to include them all.

  • Unlike some publications/blogs, Sandy Brown Jazz is not a funded website and it is not possible to pay reviewers.

  • Reviews tend to be personal opinions, something a reviewer likes might not suit you, or vice versa.

  • It is difficult to capture music in words, so much better to be able to listen and see whether the music interests you.

For these reasons in particular I just include a selection of recent recordings below where I share the notes issued by the musician(s) as an introduction and links to samples so you can 'taste' the music for yourselves. For those who like to read reviews, these, of course, can be checked out on other sites.

Some albums are priced in dollars or other currencies. These are marked ^. There are currency options if you  proceed to order. Recordings are now regularly available on different formats (CD, mp3 downloads, vinyl) or platforms e.g iTunes, Spotify, etc. I am unable to list them all so it is worth checking if you have a favourite platform).

Kit Massey (violin, piano, Fender Rhodes, Hammond B3, vocals); Jon Shenoy (clarinet, bass clarinet, vocals); Sam Dunn (guitar, vocals); Matt French (drums, percussion); Nick Walsh (double bass); Mike Guy (accordian Tracks 3,4,5,10)

Hot Club Of Jupiter Copacallisto album.jpg

'The Hot Club of Jupiter formed to provide the music for the 2013 Renault Clio online ad campaign, which was promptly judged too lewd for public consumption and withdrawn. The band however, lives on drawn together by a shared love of the music of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli. The third album from the Hot Club of Jupiter has original material from the band including swing, samba, musette, New Orleans grooves and sci-fi inspired soundscapes. Dire warnings about toxic relationships and crypto-currency scams, laments for space-bound canines and more swinging solos than you can shake a targeting laser at.' (album notes)

Dave Stapleton Quiet Fire.jpg

'Quiet Fire is the new album from British producer, musician and Edition Records founder Dave Stapleton – a beat-based jazz record shaped by rhythmically-driven, loop-focused production with the feel of a live band. Centred on Rhodes, bass and drums, the music sits in the space where jazz, instrumental beats and atmospheric electronica meet   ... His first album under his own name in over 12 years, Quiet Fire reflects a move towards beat-led writing, loop-based structure and a producer’s mindset rather than a traditional score-driven process. Synth textures, sampled fragments and understated voices broaden the sound ... Quiet Fire is an album about evolution, adaptation and instinct, marking a clear shift in Stapleton’s approach shaped by years of intensive studio work – including seven albums with the acclaimed Slowly Rolling Camera.' Billy Marrows Band - Dancing On Bentwood Chairs
(self-release, Bandcamp) - Released: 13th February 2026

Chris Williams (alto sax); Billy Marrows (guitar, loops, composition), Huw V Williams (double bass); Jay Davis (drums)

Billy Marrows Dancing On Bentwood Chairs.jpg

'Dancing on Bentwood Chairs is the first album from the Billy Marrows Band, following Billy's Parliamentary Jazz Awards 2025 Album of the Year-shortlisted debut, 'Penelope'. The title comes from an artwork by Billy’s father, Timothy Morrison, including the text: “my days of dancing on bentwood chairs were over…until now!” Recurring themes weave across the record, with inspiration from Mikhail Bulgakov’s 'The Master and Margarita' and creative use of a Blooper loop pedal. Recorded in December 2021 after a run of gigs, the music was temporarily sidelined by the Penelope charity album and Grande Família project. Marrows describes this release as “a long-awaited celebration of a band I'm really excited about and a record I’m still deeply proud of”. (album notes)

Aaron Parks By All Means.jpg

'Pianist and composer Aaron Parks expands his trio with bassist Ben Street and drummer Billy Hart into a quartet with the addition of tenor saxophonist Ben Solomon, to explore a new colour palette on his luminous 3rd Blue Note album 'By All Means'. Although Parks has made his band Little Big the center of his recorded output in recent years, he never stopped writing music that belonged to a different harmonic universe influenced by the likes of Wayne Shorter, Kenny Wheeler, Horace Silver, Duke Ellington, Joe Henderson, Kurt Rosenwinkel and others. By All Means presents seven new Parks original compositions including poignant dedications to his wife and son.' (album notes)

John Ellis & Double Wide - Fireball
(Sunnyside Records) - Released: 23rd January 2026

John Ellis (tenor and soprano sax, clarinet, bass clarinet); Alan Ferber (trombone); Matt Perrine (sousaphone); Gary Versace (upright piano, organ, accordion, Fender Rhodes, Wurlitzer); Jason Marsalis (drums, whistling); Rogerio Boccato - (percussion (4)

John Ellis Fireball.jpg

'It seems there are often two sides that must be acknowledged when considering an idea, concept or object. It could be as simple as candy being both spicy and sweet or something philosophically deeper, like seeing a destructive fire allowing for renewal. Woodwind specialist and composer John Ellis lives a musical life frequently dealing in dualities. On his new recording, Fireball, Ellis presents a new collection of music with his beloved Double Wide band that inspires dancing as much as analysis. Originally from North Carolina, Ellis has embraced a musical identity that walks a line between heady and visceral. This identity is informed in part by the influences of his southern upbringing and formative years in New Orleans along with his longtime investment in the jazz world of New York City. ...... Peter Furlan Project - Live At Maureen's Jazz Cellar
(Beany Bops Records) - Released:  19th January 2026

Peter Furlan (compositions, arrangements, tenor sax, soprano sax); Vinnie Cutro (trumpet, flugelhorn); Andrew Beals (alto sax); Erick Storckman (trombone); Brad Hubbard (baritone sax, bass clarinet); Neil ”Nail” Alexander (piano); Joel Newton (guitar); Charlie Dougherty (bass); Nadav Snir-Zelniker (drums)

Peter Furlan Project Live at Maureens.jpg

'Bret Primack, award winning journalist, filmmaker & author of "How John Coltrane Changed Me - A Jazz Journey," has to say about "Peter Furlan Project Live At Maureen's Jazz Cellar." "This dynamic nonet, recorded live at Maureen’s Jazz Cellar—the coolest jazz club in Rockland County, New York—features a group of seasoned musicians performing the compositions and arrangements of saxophonist Peter Furlan, a player known for his formidable chops and boundless creativity. The work Mr. Furlan has put in over the years really shows not only in his horn but how he voices the ensemble, creating arrangements that maximize the nonet's potential for both power and subtlety. The combination of seasoned musicians, a hip venue with an engaged audience, and Furlan's adventurous musical conception creates the perfect conditions for the kind of spontaneous magic that defines great live jazz recordings." Noah Preminger - Dark Days
(Criss Cross Jazz) - Released:  28th November 2025

Noah Preminger (tenor sax); Ely Perlman (guitar); Kim Cass (bass); Terreon Gully (drums)

Noah Preminger Dark Days.jpg

'Although winter solstice was imminent when Noah Preminger was preparing to record his fourth Criss Cross session last December, diminishing daylight was not the reason for the album’s title. Rather, “Dark Days” reflects the eminent tenor saxophonist’s overall state of mind in 2024. “I was deep in hell,” he says, reflecting on a year when he experienced chronic health issues (since resolved) and a divorce. “It was a dark time.” Throughout the year, Preminger could count on an opportunity “to wash away the dust of everyday life,” as Art Blakey once put it, at his weekly Friday-Saturday engagement at Wally’s Jazz Café in Boston, where he performed and developed the tunes that appear on this kinetic, conversational, virtuosically executed quartet recital. “I’ve led a group at Wally’s since 2021, when they reopened after the pandemic,” Preminger says. “It’s important because so many people go to school in Boston, and it’s a place where everybody can come and hang out and play and develop their thing. It’s been a great outlet for me to play and workshop new material as I write it. And getting to play twice a week is unheard-of.” ....(album notes)

Airelle Besson & Lionel Suarez - Blossom
(Brettes Prod / Papillon Jaune Records) - Released:  2026

Airelle Besson (trumpet); Lionel Saurez (accordion)

Besson Suarez Blossom.jpg

'Blossom' by trumpet virtuoso, composer and arranger Airelle Besson and accordionist Lionel Suarez, who perform a series of duets written and refined over the ten years they have played together as a duo. A series of trumpet and accordion duets may seem unusual, but Besson and Suarez dispel that notion as the music unfolds. At times hushed and intimate, and at other times cantered on melody with clear understated lyricism. Multi-award-winning Airelle Besson who made a name for herself on the European jazz scene with her clear and powerful playing is a much sought-after side-musician, as well as a band leader and established composer. Lionel Suarez has worked with a prestigious array of artists, including Richard Bona, Didier Lockwood and Charles Aznavour. The album begins with the title track (Blossom) a light and immediate song composed by Besson. .... Theresult is Blossom'', a highly accomplished album on which trumpet and accordion shine in equal measure.' (album notes)

Nils Landgren & Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra - Love Of My Life

(ACT Music) - Released: 13th February 2026

Nils Landgren (trombone); Joel Lyssarides (piano); Lars Danielsson (bass); Robert Ikiz (drums); Ida Sand (vocals on #1, 4, 9, 10, 11, piano on #4); with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and arrangements by Vince Mendoza.

Nils Landgren Love Of My Life.jpg

'Nils Landgren marks his 70th birthday with Love of My Life — an album that reflects not only the scale of his achievement, but also the astonishingly wide range of roles his life in music has embraced. As one of the most successful European jazz musicians of the past few decades, Landgren has long been more than a trombonist or singer: he is a connector, a mentor, a bridge-builder. Recorded with close friends and the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra under the opulent arrangements of Vince Mendoza, the album spans from Landgren’s own tender compositions to reimagined works by Cat Stevens, Leonard Bernstein, Herbie Hancock, and others — yet it remains unmistakably Landgren: open, warm, and full of humanity. “The most important thing in music for me is: no pigeonholing. It’s always better to explore together a bit, to try to do some new things,” he says. That spirit of curiosity and connection shines through every note. Love of My Life is both a milestone and a mirror: the sound of an artist who, after a lifetime of making music with love, continues to share that love with the world.' (album notes)

Yosef Gutman - Resisei Lyla
(Soul Song Records) - Released:  16th January 2026

Yosef Gutman (acoustic bass guitar contrabass); Tal Yahalom (guitar); Omri Mor (piano); Yoed Nir (cello); Itamar Doari (percussion)

Magnus Carlson Shadows.jpg

'Night falls differently in Jerusalem. For Yosef Gutman Levitt, those twilight hours when Hasidic melodies known as “nigunim” drift from neighborhood windows have shaped a musical vision both traditional and urgently contemporary. After stepping away from New York's jazz scene for over a decade - building a tech company, raising a family - the bassist returned to music with a question: What happens when “nigunim” meet the precision and improvisational musings of modern jazz? It's here, in these fragmented moments between night and day, that the South African-born musician has crafted Resisei Lyla (fragments of night) - an album that doesn't so much fuse jazz with Jewish mysticism as reveal an old kinship. The title itself, drawn from Shir Hashirim, speaks to a knowing that transcends the sensory world. "This knowing, according to Jewish mysticism, is called 'Darkness,'" Levitt explains, his voice carrying the weight of years spent navigating between Manhattan's jazz clubs and Jerusalem's sacred study halls. ..... Kurt Elling with The WDR Big Band - In The Brass Palace
(Big Shoulders Records Records) - Released: 13th February 2026

Kurt Elling (voice); Bob Mintzer (saxophone, conductor); WDR Big Band Cologne : Billy Test (piano); John Goldsby (bass); Hans Dekker (drums); Trumpets: Wim Both, Rob Bruynen, Andy Haderer, Ruud Breuls, Carlo Nardozza; Trombones: Jonathan Böbel, Raphael Klemm, Andy Hunter, Mattis Cederberg; Saxes / Woodwinds: Johan Hörlén, Karolina Strassmayer, Ben Fitzpatrick, Paul Heller, Jens Neufang.

Kurt Elling In The Brass Palace.jpg

'For years, Kurt Elling has imagined what might happen if the full force of a modern big band could be shaped around the human voice - not as ornament, but as its emotional and narrative center. In The Brass Palace is the realization of that vision.Recorded with Germany’s legendary WDR Big Band and conducted by Bob Mintzer, the album pairs Elling’s unmistakable voice - by turns muscular, lyrical, playful, and searching - with widescreen orchestration that feels both classic and unmistakably contemporary. The result is a collection that swings hard, moves deeply, and treats the big band not as a museum piece, but as a living, breathing, expressive partner. Elling has long been celebrated for pushing the boundaries of vocal jazz through storytelling, vocalese, and fearless reinterpretation. Here, that adventurous spirit is magnified. Each track unfolds like a scene - rich with color, momentum, and emotional weight - inviting the listener into a world where language, rhythm, and harmony move as one. In The Brass Palace stands as one of the most ambitious projects of Elling’s career: a bold meeting of voice and orchestra, tradition and innovation, craft and imagination. It is big, expressive jazz - made for listening closely and feeling deeply.' (album notes)

John Taylor, Stan Sulzmann, with NDR Orchestra - Quintessence

(Jazz In Britain Records) - Released:  18th February 2026 â€‹

John Taylor (piano); Stan Sulzmann (soprano saxophone); Rundfunkorchester Hannover des NDR with Dieter Glawischnig (conductor)

John Taylor Stan Sulzmann Quintessence.jpg

'Quintessence is the result of a week rehearsing and recording in Hannover with the NDR Orchestra for a 1987 radio broadcast. Stan Sulzmann had a private copy which he sent to Jazz In Britain some four years ago, urging us to seek consents for its release. We finally achieved that last year and so here you have this remarkable recording which has sat unheard in the NDR archives for nearly forty years“ The piano is often referred to as an orchestra, a kind of overview of possibilities in a box. Stravinsky did all his writing sat behind one. John Taylor’s music has always had an orchestral scope to it somehow, and so it’s only right that this remarkable recording exists. His dense and emotional chords, the skittish melody lines, always suggested the colours and contrast drawn from turn of the century (20th!) classical composers, and so this luxurious setting for his music seems the logical choice. From this, as well as a lifetime’s experience in jazz, John Taylor spun something singular and completely himself. Whether playing in Johnny Griffin’s rhythm section or the revolutionary trio Azimuth with Norma Winstone and Kenny Wheeler, Taylor could mix the elegance of logical construction with the mad dash for seemingly unplayable lines, moving from humour to pathos in the blink of an eye. As his duo partner on these sessions, Stan Sulzmann, points out ”it’s easy just to talk about the compositions, but actually it’s John’s playing as much as anything else, the way he fits in with all that orchestral sound.” Liam Noble." Red Norvo - The Secret Session

(Dot Time Records) - Released:  30th January 2026

Red Norvo (xylophone); Shorty Rogers (trumpet); Eddie Bert (trombone); Aaron Sachs (clarinet, alto sax); poss. Hank Kahout (piano); Clyde Lombardi (bass); Specs Powell (drums).

Red Norvo The Secret Session.jpg

'Red Norvo had taste. ‘Mr. Swing’ also had a problem. In late 1942, Norvo knew that the United States’ involvement in WWII would soon deplete his septet of key musicians and there was the small matter of the American Federation of Musicians strike which had effectively, and without exception, shuttered all the recording studios. Red Norvo was not a man, or indeed a musician, to follow the rules and he persuaded a studio engineer to let them in on the sly. In the dead of night, Red Norvo and the band ‘gained access’ to the equipment and began to play. ‘Red Norvo: The Secret Session’ is the result. More than 60 years after the clandestine opera- tion, the previously unheard album is now available on CD and digital formats as part of the ‘Legends’ series........ (album notes)
