A few words about recent releases / reviews:

Apart from where they are included in articles on this website, I don't have a 'Reviews' section for a number of reasons:

  • I receive so many requests to review recordings it is impossible to include them all.

  • Unlike some publications/blogs, Sandy Brown Jazz is not a funded website and it is not possible to pay reviewers.

  • Reviews tend to be personal opinions, something a reviewer likes might not suit you, or vice versa.

  • It is difficult to capture music in words, so much better to be able to listen and see whether the music interests you.

For these reasons in particular I just include a selection of recent recordings below where I share the notes issued by the musician(s) as an introduction and links to samples so you can 'taste' the music for yourselves. For those who like to read reviews, these, of course, can be checked out on other sites.

Some albums are priced in dollars or other currencies. These are marked ^. There are currency options if you  proceed to order. Recordings are now regularly available on different formats (CD, mp3 downloads, vinyl) or platforms e.g iTunes, Spotify, etc. I am unable to list them all so it is worth checking if you have a favourite platform).

Sam Braysher - That's Him : The Music Of Kurt Weill
(self-release) - Released: 28th June 2024

Sam Braysher (alto saxophone); Sara Dowling (vocals tracks 2, 6, 9); Matyas Gayer (piano); Dario Di Lecce (double bass); Steve Brown (drums)

Sam Braysher Thats Him Kurt Weill.jpg

'Sam Braysher’s new record (2024) takes a closer look at the fascinating music of German-American composer Kurt Weill. The London-based alto saxophonist received widespread acclaim for the two previous albums released under his own name, both of which feature renowned international collaborators. An intriguing look at some of Kurt Weill's lesser-known compositions, ranging from straight-ahead swingers, to more introspective numbers that capture his earlier, more Eurocentric classical side. Sam Braysher is joined by an all-star rhythm section, with special guest vocalist Sara Dowling appearing on three of the ten tracks' (album notes)

Elaine Delmar - Speak Low
(Ubuntu Music) - Released: 19th July 2024

Elaine Delmar Speak Low.jpg

'This is vocalist Elaine Delmar's first album in many years, It features some of the real treasures from her repertoire. The songs span the decades, from the 1920s to the 2000s, in arrangements by many of Elaine's wonderful musical collaborators over the years. The album features the musicians whom Elaine considers her musical family and highlights Elaine's unique ability to communicate the meaning of the lyric, the beauty of the melody and the reflective side of jazz. "The album features the musicians whom I consider my musical family. Most of the songs on this CD have been in my performing repertoire for many years but until now I had not recorded them. I am very fortunate to have had many diverse and highly original arrangements for me by different musicians that I have worked with closely over the more than 50 years of my career". Orlando Le Fleming - Wandering Talk
(Whirlwind Recordings) - Released: 21st June 2024

Philip Dizack (trumpet); Nathaniel Facey (alto sax  1,3,5,7); Tom Cawley (piano, Rhodes MK8, Prophet 12, Orberheim OB-6); James Maddren (drums); Orlando le Fleming (double & electric bass); Chris Martin, Nadia le Fleming (vocals 8)

Orlando Le Fleming Wandering Talk.jpg

'Bassist, bandleader and composer Orlando le Fleming continues to make music that crosses genres as readily as he crosses the Atlantic. After 20 years in New York City, he’s back in his native UK, forging new pathways and renewing old partnerships. His love for the acoustic tradition continues unabated alongside his deep affection for the robust, muscular electric fusion that emerged in the 1980s. The Romantic Funk project was born in New York’s legendary 55 Bar to explore that legacy: now the new album Wandering Talk builds on the acclaim generated by 2020’s The Unfamiliar, building on the framework with a set of collaborators that brings together London and New York, past and present, acoustic and electric, and merges it all into a spectacular whole. Following the same principles that served the project in NYC, le Fleming booked four Friday nights at London’s renowned Vortex Club to workshop the music that would become the album, with a rotating cast of players which he honed down into the final line-up. Old London friends Tom Cawley (piano/keys) and James Maddren (drums) completed the rhythm section: new acquaintance Nathaniel Facey was picked from the ranks of the UK’s brightest young saxophone players: NYC stalwart Philip Dizack flew in from the US to play trumpet: and reaching back to Orlando’s school days and forward to his own family, onetime classmate Chris Martin (now of stadium rockers Coldplay) and his own daughter Nadia combined to provide vocals on a special setting of Rumi’s poetry. ..... Zara McFarlane - Sweet Whispers : Celebrating Sarah Vaughan
(Eternal Source Of Light Records) - Released: 14th June 2024

Zara McFalane (vocals); Giacomo Smith (clarinet, soprano sax); Gabriella Swallow (cello); Joe Webb (piano); Ferg Ireland (bass); Jas Kayser (drums); Marlon Hibbert (steel pan)

Zara McFarlane Sweet Whisp;ers.jpg

'Multi-award-winning singer-songwriter and leading UK jazz vocalist Zara McFarlane releases Sweet Whispers – Celebrating Sarah Vaughan on 14th June. The album honours the jazz great who inspired her on her own artistic journey and whose centenary year is marked in 2024. ‘Sweet Whispers’ is more than a run-through of some of Vaughan’s most popular songs. It’s not hard to imagine the immense task in selecting those songs, after all, Vaughan’s recording career spanned 50 years notching up almost 60 albums (plus nearly 30 again in compilations and box sets). Through a thoughtfully chosen selection of songs, formed across months in collaboration with producer, and the album’s clarinettist and saxman, Giacomo Smith – Zara journeys through the musical life of Sarah Vaughan, from her first to last recording, bringing to life and breathing new life into some of her best and less familiar songs. But importantly, the songs that mean the most to Zara. Zara McFarlane said “It was when I started to listen to Sarah Vaughan that I really began to appreciate jazz vocals. She had such control across her range and a vocal command that was cheeky, playful and fun yet sophisticated and articulate. I really wanted to pay homage to her as I feel she has been somewhat overlooked amongst the jazz singers. Although I do love Ella and Billie, it's all about Sarah for me.” .... (album notes)

Fergus McCreadie - Stream
(Edition Records) - Released: 3rd May 2024

Fergus McCreadie (piano); David Bowden (double bass); Stephen Henderson (drums)

Fergus McCreadie Stream.jpg

' ..... The album’s narrative is a testament to the trio’s evolving musical identity, meticulously crafted to mirror a journey from darkness to light. McCreadie shares, “What I like most about this album is that it evolves from dark to light as the album goes on. It’s a sort of cloudy skies to sunnier skies journey, quite different from previous albums where the track sequence was more arbitrary.” Their sound, a nuanced tapestry woven with delicate touches and bold strokes, speaks of their confidence and exuberance in forging a distinct path. “Stream” is an exploration of shared passions and expressions, pushing the boundaries of their musical language and vocabulary to new depths. With “Stream,” Fergus McCreadie, Bowden, and Henderson offer a refreshing antidote to the predictable. Their music is a celebration of individuality, a journey that resonates with the trio’s unique voice. It’s an invitation to listeners to immerse themselves in a soundscape that’s both familiar in its Scottish roots and revolutionary in its jazz execution – a goal every artist aspires to achieve ......' Nigel Price Organ Trio - Live '23
(Nervy Nigel Records) - Released: 3rd June 2024 [2 CDs]

Nigel Price (guitar); Ross Stanley (Hammond organ); Peter Johnstone (organ); Joel Barford (drums)

Nigel Price Organ Trio Live 23.jpg

'Live '23 was recorded across three nights on the Nigel Price Organ Trio' s extensive (43 date) tour of the UK in 2023. Jazz groups seldom have the opportunity to play together night after night. The resulting synergy from this often goes undocumented, but luckily for the trio, three sound engineers just happened to capture three corking gigs! Only the second set at the Lighthouse in Deal was documented, but they managed to get the whole lot from the Globe in Newcastle. The other three tracks are from taken from the album launch at Pizza Express in Soho, London. As well as the regular line up of Joel, Ross and Nigel this recording also features another remarkable organist - Peter Johnstone from Glasgow, who depped for Ross on the northern/Scottish leg of the tour. It's a glimpse into life on the road, 'at the coal face', and the reality of the music at the point of delivery from perhaps the most prolific UK touring jazz group of the 21st century.' Oded Tzur - My Prophet
(ECM Records) - Released: 7th June 2024

Oded Tzur (tenor saxophone); Nitai Hershkovits (piano); Petros Klampanis (double bass); Cyrano Almeida: (drums)

Oded Tzur My Prophet.jpeg

'On My Prophet, Oded Tzur together with his quartet of pianist Nitai Hershkovits, bassist Petros Klampanis and the new group member Cyrano Almeida on drums, continues on the idiosyncratic musical path he has carved out for himself - a flowing jazz idiom that seamlessly combines multiple forms of expression - while delving deeper into the meditative and highly concentrated realm of improvisation. In the process, the saxophonist presents some of his fiercest playing yet. The quartet's synergy is of a unique blend, with each player's distinct voice adding to an ensemble sound capable of conjuring both the quietest storm and the most passionate crescendo. Hershkovits's bountiful stylistic reach and fluent technique swirl around Oded's unmistakable tenor tone with Klampanis providing both backbone and melody, adaptable yet guiding - just like his rhythm-partner Almeida.' John Escreet - The Epicenter Of Your Dreams
(Blue Room Music) - Released: 7th June 2024

John Escreet (piano); Mark Turner (tenor saxophone); Eric Revis (bass); Damion Reid (drums).

John Escreet The Epicenter Of Your Dreams.jpg

'Critically acclaimed pianist adds tenor saxophone master Mark Turner to trio with bassist Eric Revis and drummer Damion Reid — a powerhouse band reflecting the thriving L.A. scene. Adventurous program includes tributes to piano heroes Andrew Hill and Stanley Cowell. On John Escreet’s 2022 album Seismic Shift, his first-ever release in the trio format, the pianist and composer introduced a group of the rarest strength and intelligence. Joining the U.K.-born musician were two extraordinary improvisers he’d reconnected with in Los Angeles, where he’d moved from Brooklyn just prior to the pandemic in 2020: bassist Eric Revis, a veteran of the furiously swinging Branford Marsalis Quartet who also excels in avant-garde settings; and the drummer Damion Reid, whose unparalleled ability to chop up a rhythm with finesse has made him a go-to collaborator for Robert Glasper, Steve Lehman and many others. Unsurprisingly, their dynamic music — which ranged from the tightly composed to the freely improvised, the elegant to the fierce, hitting all emotional points in between — astonished critics and audiences alike. In his review, DownBeat editor Frank Alkyer highlighted the “agility and interplay between the three,” which “makes the entirety of Seismic Shift a joyful, ‘hell, yeah’ listen. The album’s intensity pulls you in even when Escreet turns the burner down a notch.” ...... (album notes)

His 2015 album The Epic, as well as 2018’s Heaven and Earth were received by critics and audiences as a reimagination of modern jazz showcasing Washington’s larger-than-lift compositions full of celestial grandeur and his distinct blend of jazz, Latin, funk, classical, hip-hop and soul. Fearless Movement, however, offers something different: terrestrial rhythms and collaborations from rappers, musical icons and even Washington’s own daughter. Alfredo Colón - Blood Burden
(Out Of Your Head Rcords) - Released:   14th June 2024

Alfredo Colón (alto saxophone); Lex Korton (piano); Steve Williams (double bass); Connor Parks (drums).

Alfredo Colon Blood Burden.jpg

'Blood Burden is the debut album from Brooklyn-based saxophonist, composer, and bandleader Alfredo Colón. Deeply rooted in the blues tradition, Alfredo brings harrowingly raw emotion in the form of barely-contained chaos to Blood Burden — a meditation on the interplay of Dominican folklore and Catholic imagery and ethos, and an ode to his immediate family members in the face of intergenerational trauma.
Recorded at Figure 8 studios in New York with Lex Korton on piano, Steve Williams on bass, and Connor Parks on drums, Blood Burden perfectly balances Alfredo’s own artistic vision with the distinct sonic languages of each of his band members—from Lex’s sensitive and subtle, yet dynamic storytelling, to Steve’s rhythmic intricacy and playful tests of his bandmates’ ability to think on their feet, to Connor’s lush, interactive, and oftentimes explosive drumming. With this, it becomes more than clear that Alfredo composes with his bandmates serving as crucial inspiration ..... (album notes)

Alex Harding / Lucian Ban - Blutopia
(Sunnyside Records) - Released:   17th May 2024

Alex Harding (baritone saxophone); Lucian Ban (piano); Mat Maneri (viola); Bob Stewart (tuba); Brandon Lewis (drums)

Alex Harding Lucien Ban Blutopia.jpg

'The relationship between Alex Harding and Lucian Ban has been long and fruitful. Their combination of elements of improvisational music have helped the pair develop a unique musical language that transcends the expectations of the jazz genre. Their new recording, Blutopia, highlights their attuned rapport while allowing their music to unfold with their own singular ensemble, propelled by the tuba stylings of the great Bob Stewart. Pianist Lucian Ban arrived in New York City from Romania to study at the New School in 1998. As he first began to immerse himself into the local scene, Ban was fortunate to hear baritone saxophonist Alex Harding. The two hit it off immediately and formed a fast friendship leading to musical collaboration. This led to Ban providing a handful of songs for Harding and Harding becoming an essential voice on Ban’s recording debut on their co-led album, Somethin’ Holy ...... (album notes)

Max Stadfield / STAX - Fancy Future
(Stunt Records) - Released: 21st June 2024

Reza Askari (double bass); Bertram Burkert (guitar, effects); Matthew Halpin (saxophone, flute); Max Stadtfeld (drums)

STAX Fancy Future.jpg

'Leipzig based Max Stadtfeld isn't just an outstanding drummer and improviser. He's also a warm-hearted optimist, an enthusiastic forward-thinker. In times of multiple crises and facing fundamental challenges, he now ventures with "Fancy Future" to attempt a utopian counter-design. "Fancy Future" is both a hopeful plea for more empathy, compassion, and camaraderie, but also a call to recognize that there is still much work and rethinking ahead of us. As with the previous album, Max collaborates with artist Ebony Schneeweiß for "Fancy Future". However, this time, she's not only responsible for the artwork but also developed a comic book based on the music. In this, a touching and humorous story between galaxy-hopping and camaraderie is told alongside the eight tracks of the album. So first and foremost: Get your favorite snacks and headphones ready, grab the comic, settle onto the couch, and then dive into STAX's "Fancy Future" - and get some ideas on how we can collectively shape our own future.' Scott Murphy - A Dream Of Form
(self-release) - Released: 20th April 2024

Scott Murphy (tenor saxophone); Janek Gwizdała (electric bass); Daniel Chu (keyboard , synthesisers); Padget Fresh Nanton (drums)

Scott Murphy A Dream Of Form.jpg

'Scott Murphy is an award winning saxophonist, composer and band leader from Scotland now living in Hong Kong. Attempting to find fresh sounds and connect emotionally with audiences Scott has become an artist with a globally recognised reach. “a dream of form” is an idea conceived while the inspirational music of legendary pianist Fred Hersch performing solo in Hong Kong washed over Scott Murphy which got out of hand very quickly! Before Scott even had a chance to work out what music he wanted to record musicians, engineers and a studio were booked.
A frantic period of creativity took place wherein Scott composed the music for the LP over a short couple of weeks in which he also had performances in China, multiple shows at Hong Kong’s largest Jazz festival and attempted to renew his passport against the clock. Thankfully for this project Scott had booked musicians the musical skill and excellence of whom was beyond reproach. ...... The session for “a dream of form” took place in just four hours live without rehearsal or time to attempt multiple takes. This recording is an animated example of four musicians in a room with a common goal and level of respect for improvised music as well as one another. The sheer quality of Janek, Daniel and Padget shines through with every second of this LP and cements it as a unique work featuring musicians at the top of their profession .....' (album notes)

Their debut album Velkommen håp from 2021, was well received and earned them a Norwegian Grammy in the category of jazz. When Flukten was going to record a follow-up to "Velkommen håp", they again wanted to record in the same studio and collaborate with technician Mike Hartung. The new album shows how the quartet has evolved, and the album was recorded by musicians with surplus energy to follow up the first album. Concerts are scheduled throughout Norweay, as well as Oslo Jazz Festival.' (album notes)

This recording, Copenhagen 1958 (Bonus: After Hours 1950), offers a rare glimpse into Ellington’s genius during a pivotal period in jazz history. In the late autumn of 1958, Ellington and his orchestra embarked on a whirlwind tour across Europe, leaving a trail of musical brilliance in their wake. Among the highlights of this tour were two electrifying concerts held at Copenhagen’s iconic sports center, KB Hallen, on November 7. Although the original tapes have been lost to time, segments of these historic performances were broadcasted on separate occasions. Now, these broadcast recordings serve as the foundation for this release, transporting listeners back to a time, when Ellington’s music redefined the jazz landscape ......' (album notes)

Horace Parlan - Four Classic Albums

(Avid Jazz) - Released: 2024 [2 CDs]

Horace Parlan (piano) with various personnel including Tommy Turrentine (trumpet); Stanley Turrentine (tenor sax); George Tucker (bass) and Al Harewood (drums)

Horace Parlan Four Classic Albums.jpg

'AVID Jazz continues with its Four Classic Album series with a re-mastered 2CD release from Horace Parlan, complete with original artwork, liner notes and personnel details. The Horace Parlan Quintet -'Speakin' My Piece'; & 'On The Spur Of The Moment'; The Horace Parlan Trio-'Us Three' and The Horace Parlan Quartet-'Headin' South'. Here's a pianist who had the hardest of tough breaks shortly after his birth in 1931 in Pittsburgh, Penn when he was sadly struck down by polio. It left Horace with a badly disfigured right hand forcing him in later life as a musician to rely heavily on his left hand. Thus he developed an incredibly forceful left hand style of chording that he would accompany with his crippled right hand. Known as a hard and post bop player Horace gained his reputation playing with the likes of Sonny Stitt and Charles Mingus (AMSC1026), Eddie 'Lockjaw' Davis (AMSC1309), Lou Donaldson, Dexter Gordon (AMSC1199) and Stanley Turrentine (AMSC1319). Horace Parlan spent his early recording years with Blue Note and here we feature four classic albums from that era, two Quintet sessions where he is joined by the Turrentine brothers, a Trio set with George Tucker on bass and Al Harewood on drums and finally a Quartet album where the Trio is joined by the legendary conga player Ray Barretto. As with all AVID releases, we hope you enjoy this classic set and check out our extensive catalogue for more great music across jazz, blues, country and many other musical genres.' (album notes)

Jazz Artists Guild - Newport Rebels

(Candid Records) - Released: 15th M<arch 2024

Personnel includes Eric Dolphy (alto sax, bass clarinet, flute); Roy Eldridge, Benny Bailey, Kenny Dorham (trumpet); Booker Irvin (tenor sax); Charles McPherson (alto sax); Jimmy Knepper, JUlian Priester (trombone); Tommy Flanagan I(piano);GAN (piano), Max Roach, Jo Jones (drums), among others.

Cannonball Adderley Montreal 1975.jpg

'In July of 1960, in protest against what they considered the failings of the jazz scene and the accelerating commercialization of the annual Newport Jazz Festival, Charles Mingus and Max Roach staged their own "rebel" festival at nearby Cliff Walk Manner, RI. The rebels set up their own tents for sleeping, built their own stage, handled advertising, promotion, ticket taking and MC duties. By all accounts the concert was wholly inspired and a peaceful affair. Meanwhile, what was supposed to be an alternative festival turned out to be the only one in town. Unable to disperse an intoxicated mob of young people seeking access to the sold-out show at Freebody Park, the actual Newport Jazz Festival ended abruptly in a full scale riot.Despite the fact that these sessions were held in the studio, the music reflects the high-spirited freedom of the best jazz played at the original setting with nearly all of it improvised during the recording. Of particular note is the Booker Little track "Cliff Walk," which features both Max Roach and Jo Jones, two of the greatest jazz drummers ever, trading off. The LP includes extraordinary liner notes written by Hentoff himself, giving a context and insight that adds to the experience of hearing these magnificent performances. This recording is remastered by legendary mastering engineer, Bernie Grundman.' (album notes)

Charles Mingus - In Session : Mingus Fingus

(Jasmine Records) - Released: 12th July 2024

Charles Mingus (bass) with various personnel

Charles Mingus Mingus Fingus.jpg

'Arguably one of the greatest musicians and composers in the history of Jazz, Charlie Mingus was a bassist, pianist, composer, arranger and band leader. Before finding fame in his own right, he played with many of the world's greatest musicians as a sideman. This set features him playing on sides from Russell Jacquet, Howard McGhee, Ernie Andrews, Dinah Washington, Lionel Hampton, Oscar Pettiford, Charlie Parker, Quincy Jones & Duke Ellington as well as early studio bands of his own.

The original 78’s of many of these sides are extremely rare and many have not been re-issued until now. This set is a must for jazz fans and a tribute to Mingus’s artistry and versatility.' (album notes)
