Recent Releases

A few words about recent releases / reviews:

Apart from where they are included in articles on this website, I don't have a 'Reviews' section for a number of reasons:

  • I receive so many requests to review recordings it is impossible to include them all.

  • Unlike some publications/blogs, Sandy Brown Jazz is not a funded website and it is not possible to pay reviewers.

  • Reviews tend to be personal opinions, something a reviewer likes might not suit you, or vice versa.

  • It is difficult to capture music in words, so much better to be able to listen and see whether the music interests you.

For these reasons in particular I just include a selection of recent recordings below where I share the notes issued by the musician(s) as an introduction and links to samples so you can 'taste' the music for yourselves. For those who like to read reviews, these, of course, can be checked out on other sites.

Some albums are priced in dollars or other currencies. These are marked ^. There are currency options if you  proceed to order. Recordings are now regularly available on different formats (CD, mp3 downloads, vinyl) or platforms e.g iTunes, Spotify, etc. I am unable to list them all so it is worth checking if you have a favourite platform).

Kokoroko Tuff Times Never Last.jpg

‘Tuff Times Never Last’ is a spirited and vibrant collection of songs serving as an optimistic reminder to tightly hold and embrace the many dualities that occur in life. Over the course of the 11-song suite, the album explores togetherness, community, sensuality, childhood, loss and above all perseverance. Initially drawing inspiration from a viral social media meme, co-bandleader Onome Edgeworth said of the title’s origins and meaning: “It’s true! Although we’re reflecting on joy and celebration, you realize that a lot of that beauty comes out of challenges and difficulties. It felt like a natural truth that we discovered whilst writing”. ... Speaking on the band’s progression in sound, co-bandleader Sheila Maurice-Grey said: “Innately, we’re jazz musicians but we've tried not to kind of box ourselves into one sound. So there is a level of freedom we're starting to feel. We want to continue being as creative as possible without feeling any boundaries”. .... (album notes)

Shear Brass Extraordinary Journey.jpg

'Shear Brass returns with Extraordinary Journey, a vibrant album celebrating the life and music of jazz legend Sir George Shearing. The recording offers a whistle-stop tour through Shearing's remarkable musical evolution, from his early days in dance band music, through the bebop and cool jazz eras, to the Latin rhythms of the 1950s and the popular vocal collaborations that followed. Punchy new brass arrangements by trumpeter Jason McDermid bring a fresh, contemporary edge while honouring the distinctive charm and elegance of Shearing's sound. .... The 12-track album includes two new original compositions by Pearson - 'Shear Delight' and 'By George!' - crafted in Shearing's signature style. Other highlights include a breezy take on 'September in the Rain', the sultry 'Do I Love You?', and 'Mambo No. 2', a nod to Shearing's Latin phase. Fresh lyrics breathe new life into classic instrumentals 'Black Satin' and 'Just A Mood'.More than just a retrospective, Extraordinary Journey is a celebration of a singular musical life that defied categorisation and helped pave the way for British jazz on the international stage. Part loving tribute, part bold reinvention, Extraordinary Journey reimagines Shearing's music for a new era.' (album notes)

Joe Stilgoe and the Entertainers - Welcome To The Club
(Westway Music) - Released: 12th September 2025

Joe Stilgoe (vocals, piano); Giacomo Smith (clarinet); Pete Horsfall (trumpet, vocals); Emma Smith (vocals); Honey Boulton, Billy Adamson (guitar); Tom Farmer (bass) Will Cleasby (drums)

Joe Stilgoe Welcome To The Club.jpg

'Joe Stilgoe and the Entertainers, the new powerhouse jazz supergroup, have put together a record like no other; a purelove letter to jazz clubs around the world, and the people who frequent them. Titans of the UK jazz scene, singer and pianist Joe Stilgoe and clarinettist Giacomo Smith have come together to form The Entertainers, which features members of Kansas Smitty's House Band, Joe's own band, and guest vocalists Emma Smith and Pete Horsfall. Each song on 'Welcome To The Club' tells a different tale and presents a different character from jazz clubs the worldover - the music is about membership, acceptance, a shared love of something vital, quixotic rules and regulations, the minutiae of 'everynight life', and importantly, the world of entertainment. Joe explains: "Giacomo and I started writing this album during the first lockdown. His beautiful jazz club, Kansas Smitty's, had been closed. All music venues had, but we weren't to know then that this would be a permanent full stop for the place. We swapped stories about the people who came to the club, and to the clubs we'd both played in around the world. We realised that the characters you might see in Ronnie Scott's or Birdland in New York or Blue Note Tokyo are the same... the roles always repeated even though the cast changes." (album notes)

Ineza - Ibuka
(Ineza Music) - Released: 12th September 2025

Ineza (vocals); Michael Lack (sax); Rob Brockway (piano); Benjamin Crane (bass); Kuba Miazga (drums)

Ineza Ibuka.jpg

“IBUKA” is Ineza Kerschkamp’s debut full-length album, a deeply personal and musically adventurous project dedicated to her adoptive mother, Francine. Drawing on her journey from Rwanda to Belgium and now London, Ineza channels themes of loss, healing, and personal growth into eight original songs, each shaped by her emotionally charged vocals and honest storytelling. The album builds on the foundations of contemporary jazz, blending in neo-soul, folk, and soul influences. Ineza’s writing combines rich jazz harmonies with memorable, heartfelt lyrics. The interplay between her voice and saxophone creates a unique conversational dynamic, while improvisation from the band ensures each track feels alive and immediate. “IBUKA” is a striking introduction to one of the UK jazz scene’s most distinctive new voices.' George Double (drums, percussion, harmony vocals)

Chris Ingham Quintet Walter Donald.jpg

'The songs of Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, aka Steely Dan, stood alone in 1970s rock; cryptic, pungent lyrics and sophisticated, detailed music deeply influenced by, in Becker and Fagen’s own words, “the best jazz players of the ‘50s and ‘60s”. Steely Jazz re-examines the Dan canon, illuminating the singular melodies, rich harmonies and exploring the small jazz group possibilities of an incomparably opulent songbook.'

Jim Black and the Shrimps.jpg

'Better You Don't is Jim Black & The Schrimps' second release. And what a release it is! Led by mastermind Jim Black, the quartet celebrates multi-layered jazz with haunting intensity, stylistic openness, rhythmic explosiveness, and intoxicating energy. In this formation, Jim Black brings together the Berlin saxophonists Asger Nissen Julius Gawlik and bassist Felix Henkelhausen, who are among the most original and articulate voices in European jazz innovation, with the same basic instrumentation as two of the greatest bands Black has propelled and helped shape from behind the kit – Tim Berne’s Bloodcount and the collective Endangered Blood. Jim Black is one of those important drummers, like Art Blakey, Max Roach, and Paul Motian, who not only shine as instrumentalists but also repeatedly form groups with primarily younger musicians in order to try out new material and achieve creative heights. Cast off and have fun!' (album notes)

Linda May Han Oh - Strange Heavens
(Biophilia Records) - Released: 22nd August 2025

Linda May Han Oh (bass); Ambrose Akinmusire (trumpet); Tyshawn Sorey (drums)

Linda May Han Oh Strange Heavens.jpg

'This album is a raw, unfiltered sonic journey propelled by the elemental force of bassist Linda May Han Oh, trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire, and drummer Tyshawn Sorey. The music resists categorization—shifting effortlessly from tender lyricism to electrifying intensity. It’s emotional, urgent, and unapologetically vulnerable, channeling both power and fragility in equal measure. Each track unfolds as a cathartic expedition, where improvisation becomes not just a method, but a form of truth-telling.' (album notes)

Nils Petter Molvaer - Khmer Live in Bergen
(Edition Records) - Released:  12th September 2025

Nils Petter Molvær (trumpet); Eivind Aarset (guitar, electronics); Jan Bang (live sampling); Pål «Strangefruit» Nyhus (DJ, MPC programming); Audun Erlien (bass); Per Lindvall (drums); Rune Arnesen (drums, percussion).

Nils Petter Molvaer - Khmer Live in Bergen.jpg

'Norwegian trumpeter and sonic architect Nils Petter Molvaer presents Khmer Live in Bergen - a charged reinvention of his era-defining 1997 ECM release KHMER - recorded in concert in 2023. Fused with live trip-hop beats, ambient haze and Nordic lyricism, Khmer Live in Bergen amplifies a new energy with deeper grooves, sharper edges and greater dynamic intensity, pushing the music into a rawer, driven by experience, control and creative vision. Performed with a newly expanded band and released on Edition Records, Khmer Live in Bergen captures the volatile electricity of Molvær’s live sound — fluid, restless and saturated with feeling. Khmer Live in Bergen is a testament to Nils Petter Molvær’s continued growth, experimentation and desire to challenge himself. The album is a powerful reminder that his sound remains vital, forceful and fully alive - constantly evolving with greater clarity, depth and intent.' (album notes)

Maria Faust Scarum Facere - Marches Rewound And Rewritten

(Stunt Records) - Released: 10th October 2025

Maria Faust (alto saxophone); Francesco Bigoni (tenor saxophone/clarinet); Anders Banke (bass clarinet/baritone horn); Kasper Tranberg (trumpet); Mads Hyhne (trombone); Jonatan Ahlbom (tuba); Emanuele Maniscalco (snare drum); Peter Ole Jørgensen (bass drum/ crotales/percussion)

Maria Faust Marches Rewound and Rewritten.jpg

'Maria Faust, Estonian-Danish saxophonist extraordinaire re-imagines music’s most militaristic form, the march, a form first and foremost associated with armies, manly valor; too often the form is propagandistic, commemorating victories or even even celebratory and festive, such as the familiar Radetzky March. We forget, however. that for the victims of war, those who hear the beat of the drum and marching feet in their own towns and countryside, the sound of an approaching army rarely augurs well. For civilians, the innocent victims of war, the sound of marching armies means death, destruction and, as we have seen in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the most horrific of crimes – torture, extrajudicial killings and mass rape. The tragedy of what the civilian faces in war is brought to the forefront in this record where the march, the customary musical accompaniment to war and armies, is hardly celebratory but covers a broad range of emotions – tragic, ominous, foreboding and mournful, to complement its more traditional role keeping marching soldiers in step...... Petter Eldh - Projekt Drums Vol 2.
(Edition Records) - Released: 10th October 2025

Petter Eldh (bass); James Maddren, Richard Spaven, Savannah Harris drums)

Petter Eldh Projekt Drums Vol 2.jpg

'The restless and visionary Swedish producer and bassist Petter Eldh – one of the most vital and sought-after voices in European jazz and experimental beat music – returns with Projekt Drums vol. 2, a high-definition evolution of his detailed beatcraft. Highly acclaimed for his prolific work with Django Bates, Jameszoo, Kit Downes and others, Eldh assembles a powerhouse trio of drummers – James Maddren, Savannah Harris, and Richard Spaven – to push his rhythmic world further. The result is a dense, pulse-driven record shaped by low-end design, breakbeats, and interwoven melodic fragments. At its core, this is a breakbeat record – stretched, twisted, and reimagined. Influences run deep from the beat-science of J Dilla, Madlib, and Flying Lotus to the drum’n’bass architecture of Roni Size and Squarepusher. Projekt Drums vol. 2 draws equally from hip hop’s swing, jungle’s velocity, and the jagged edges of experimental jazz. The album is built on circular logic – in the grooves, the sequencing, and the loops.' (album notes)

Nina Simone - Singular Simone ; The Chronological 45s - 1949-1952

 (Jasmine Records) - Released:  12th September 2025

Nina Simone (vocals, piano) with various artists

Singular Simone album.jpg

'One of the highest profile names in black American music, the iconic Nina Simone is worthy of all the praise that has been showered on her across the past six-and-a-bit decades. An earlier 2CD set from Jasmine showcasing Nina’s first LPs has been a consistent seller for Jasmine for a few years, and we are now complementing with a single CD that brings together the a sides of her first dozen singles for Bethlehem and Colpix records, plus a handful of selected B sides, for what we believe is the first multi-label overview of her earliest 45s. Several of our featured selections would go on to be associated with her for her entire career, including her first hit ‘I Loves You Porgy’, ‘Work Song’, ‘Trouble In Mind’ and her greatly belated 80s hit ‘My Baby Just Cares For Me’. All tracks are featured in their singles versions, and are presented in the order in which they were originally released. Even with an abundance of Nina on the market, we feel there’s always going to be room for one that showcases only her early 45s, and that’s the raison d’etre behind our release of “Singular Simone”. Ray Charles - Come Live With Me
(Tangerine Records) - Released:  22nd August 2025

Ray Charles (piano, electric piano, vocals) with orchestra directed and arranged by Sid Feller

Ray Charles Come Live With Me.jpg

'Come Live With Me showcases Charles in full '70s crossover mode - embracing string-laden arrangements, country-tinged ballads, and soulful soft rock. With a blend of pop and gospel-infused soul, Ray demonstrates his unmatched versatility. The album plays like Two Sides of a Saturday Night - elegant and introspective at the start, loose and electrifying by the end. Side A, arranged by longtime collaborator and conductor Sid Feller, features lush, orchestrated ballads such as Till There Was You and If You Go Away, highlighting Charles's emotive vocal delivery. In contrast, Side B shifts to a more upbeat, R&B - driven sound with tracks like Somebody and Problems, Problems, showcasing his dynamic range and adaptability. At a time when music was defined by the politically charged, genre-blending work of Funkadelic, Sly Stone, Curtis Mayfield, and Stevie Wonder and the singer-songwriter boom was in full swing. Ray Charles didn't chase trends. Instead, he carved his own path, doing something entirely his own.' (album notes)

John Taylor - Tramonto

(ECM Records) - Released:  19th September 2025

John Taylor (piano); Marc Johnson (bass); Joey Baron (drums)

John Taylor Tramonto.jpg

'Recorded live in Birmingham during a Contemporary Music Network tour in 2002,  Tramonto finds UK pianist John Taylor (1942-2015)  in celebratory, outgoing mood, fronting one of his most dynamic and quick-witted groups, with US musicians Marc Johnson and Joey Baron – the energetic team that would later collaborate on the critically-lauded ECM recording Rosslyn.  Here the repertoire features the well-known Taylor tunes “Pure and Simple”,  “Between Moons” and “Ambleside” (heard in an epic 15 minute version), as well as the Ralph Towner-composed title track and Steve Swallow’s “Up Too Late”, which swirls from bop phrasing to free playing, and includes high arco soloing from Johnson, and skittering drums from Baron.  In all, a welcome reminder of what a creative force John Taylor could be, as leader of an outstanding piano trio.'
