Recent Releases

A few words about recent releases / reviews:

Apart from where they are included in articles on this website, I don't have a 'Reviews' section for a number of reasons:

  • I receive so many requests to review recordings it is impossible to include them all.

  • Unlike some publications/blogs, Sandy Brown Jazz is not a funded website and it is not possible to pay reviewers.

  • Reviews tend to be personal opinions, something a reviewer likes might not suit you, or vice versa.

  • It is difficult to capture music in words, so much better to be able to listen and see whether the music interests you.

For these reasons in particular I just include a selection of recent recordings below where I share the notes issued by the musician(s) as an introduction and links to samples so you can 'taste' the music for yourselves. For those who like to read reviews, these, of course, can be checked out on other sites.

Some albums are priced in dollars or other currencies. These are marked ^. There are currency options if you  proceed to order. Recordings are now regularly available on different formats (CD, mp3 downloads, vinyl) or platforms e.g iTunes, Spotify, etc. I am unable to list them all so it is worth checking if you have a favourite platform).

The Harper Trio - Dialogue of Thoughts
(Yellow Man Records) - Released: 24th October 2025

Maria-Christina Harper (harp); Josephine Davies (saxophone); Evan Jenkins (drums)

The Harper Trio Dialogue Of Thoughts.jpg

'Greek born with Egyptian roots, electric jazz harpist and composer Maria-Christina Harper is reinventing the sound of the harp in the jazz world. With her anarchic spirit she presents her instrument in new and exciting ways ... In recent years, the jazz harp has quietly reemerged as a force in modern jazz circles, exemplified by electric jazz harpist and composer Maria-Christina Harper. In 2023, she released her much-acclaimed debut album 'Passing By 'with The Harper Trio, imbuing her compositions and instrument with a spirit of innovation and creative freedom. Drawing influences from her Greek and Egyptian musical roots to the avant-garde, the album established the trio's signature sound - spiritually charged, shimmering soundscapes and experimental tones - recasting the harp's place in jazz. Dialogue of Thoughts is The Harper Trio's second album reuniting the exceptional talents of celebrated drummer Evan Jenkins (of the Neil Cowley Trio) and dynamic saxophonist Josephine Davies. True to her approach, Maria-Christina Harper is less concerned with placing her harp centre stage than creating a dialogue between band members, each bringing their own experiences to the sound. ....' Fergus McCreadie - The Shieling
(Edition Records) - Released: 24th October 2025

Fergus McCreadie (piano); David Bowden (double bass); Stephen Henderson (drums)

Fergus McCreadie The Shieling.jpg

'Distinctive Scottish pianist and composer Fergus McCreadie presents The Shieling, an album that marks a nuanced and subtle yet powerful shift for him and his trio. Following the huge acclaim and success of Cairn, Forest Floor (shortlisted for Mercury Prize and winning Best Album at Scottish Music Wards) and Stream, Fergus McCreadie draws on fresh inspiration from the wild, elemental beauty of North Uist in the Scottish Outer Hebrides. Recorded in a remote cottage and produced by celebrated and fellow Mercury shortlisted artist, Laura Jurd (Dinosaur), The Sheiling reflects a deeper sense of oneness and primal rawness. The trio - recording in one room with McCreadie on an upright piano - finds new ground to their sound - lyrical, untamed and alive.' (album notes)

Sloth Racket - Arboreal
(Luminous Records) - Released: 1st Decvember 2025

Cath Roberts (baritone saxophone); Sam Andreae (alto saxophone); Anton Hunter (guitar); Seth Bennett (double bass); Johnny Hunter (drums)

Sloth Racket Arboreal.jpg

Sloth Racket is a band of UK improvisers. Guitarist Anton Hunter says: "Recorded just over two years ago on a boat in London, specifically Lightship 95 recording studio, I really like their Fender Bassman amp, especially into the Extinct Audio BM9 ribbon mic, once again I'm really happy with the guitar tones on this album. Although, of course, they'd be nothing without Cath's pieces to play! Speaking of which, there's an option to buy a companion pocket-sized (A6) booklet printed in colourful riso ink on recycled paper and card. This contains the scores we used for this session, if you'd like more of a glimpse into how we work, alongside some of Cath's artwork." (Anton Hunter, Sloth Racket)

Sebastain Rochford Finding Ways.jpg

'Sebastian Rochford is a singular force in British music, an extraordinary drummer, composer, and producer. His work with the iconic group Polar Bear helped redefine the boundaries of jazz and earned multiple Mercury Prize nominations. With a career spanning collaborations with Patti Smith, Damon Albarn, Brian Eno, Adele and Grace Jones, and his 2023 ECM duo album A Short Diary with Kit Downes, an album written for his father described as a “ quiet masterpiece” , Rochford has carved out a unique space in contemporary music. Finding Ways, his new major project, marks a bold new chapter for Seb Rochford. The first album focuses on the guitar, featuring among others, the dynamic lineup of Tara Cunningham, David Preston, Adrian Utley (Portishead), and Simon Tong (The Verve, Gorillaz), exploring various combinations and layering up to three guitars at once. To Milton is produced by Resonance founder and co-president George Klabin, who was inspired to produce this project by a chance meeting with Nascimento in 1969 at a small jazz club in New York City. Klabin picked up a copy of Nascimento’s Courage album when it came out, and it remains his absolute favorite recording of music to this day, some 56 years later.' (album notes)

Bill Ware and the Club Bird All Stars - Martian Sunset
(Sunnyside Records) - Released: 28th November 2025

Bill Ware (vibraphone, melodica); Rez Abbasi (guitar); Matt King (piano); Jay Anderson (bass); Taru Alexander (drums).

Bill Ware Martian Sunset.jpg

'Even the most prodigious and focused composers can be struck by the need to reset. Vibraphonist and composer Bill Ware had been on an ambitious mission to write a vast catalog of music when he was struck by the need to simplify his sound. This led to new pieces for his elastic ensemble, the Club Bird All-Stars, which required trust and understanding in their delicate dance of harmony and rhythm, as can be heard on Ware’s new recording, Martian Sunset. Best known for his work with The Jazz Passengers and Groove Collective, Bill Ware has been an asset in collaborations across multiple genres, featuring in the work of well-known musicians and bands, like Steely Dan and Elvis Costello. Ware has maintained his own ensembles for just as long. One of the longest lived has been his Club Bird All-Stars, which takes its name from a long-gone Japanese jazz club that provided Ware a three-month residency in the mid-1990s...... (album notes)

Iiro Rantala, Kaisa Maensivu, Morten Lund - Trinity
(ACT Music) - Released:  14th November 2025

Iiro Rantala (piano); Kaisa Mäensivu (bass); Morten Lund (drums)

Rantala Maensivu Lund Trinity.jpg

'Pianist Iiro Rantala, bassist Kaisa Mäensivu, and drummer Morten Lund come together at Château Palmer to explore the timeless beauty of jazz standards — with no rehearsals, no second guesses, just pure musical chemistry. Recorded as part of the ACTxPalmer Collection, Trinity captures the immediacy and intimacy of three artists discovering each other in real time. The result is both spontaneous and deeply refined — a celebration of melody, empathy, and simplicity. From the joyful swing of “I Love You” to the tenderness of “Smile,” Trinity unfolds like a series of intimate conversations. Three musicians listening, breathing, and responding as one. Captured in natural daylight at the Château, the sound is as pure as the setting: elegant, organic, and alive. With Trinity, Rantala, Mäensivu, and Lund reaffirm that jazz - like fine wine - is at its best when it’s honest, unpretentious, and shared among friends.

Jeremy Rose - Infinity II

(Earshift Music) - Released: 14th November 2025

Jeremy Rose (tenor and soprano saxophone); Novak Manojlovic (keyboard and synthesizers; Ben Carey (modular synthesizer); Tully Ryan (drums)

Jeremy Rose Infinity II.jpg

'This is their second album, following on from the critically acclaimed Project Infinity: Live at Phoenix Central Park, and Rose’s 26th release. Beautifully recorded live at Lazybones Lounge in Marrickville, Sydney, Infinity II is a hypnotic exploration into the outer edges of jazz, ambient and electronic music. With modular textures weaving through swirling improvisations and lyrical saxophone lines awash in reverb and delay, Rose and his collaborators craft immersive soundscapes that feel both timeless and urgently present. “This group comprises some artists that I particularly resonate with. Everything feels completely natural when we play,” Rose explains. “It’s surprising listening back to it - it’s as if we are improvising composed pieces. The group manages to improvise form so well that it sounds composed. I guess that’s the beauty of it. Novak and Tully had just returned from touring together in Hekka, and they sounded particularly connected. But between the four of us, we managed to bring out something that night - everything came together.” .......(album notes)

Rebecca Trescher - Changing Perspectives
(Enja Records) - Released: 7th November 2025

Rebecca Trescher (clarinet, bass clarinet, composition); Andreas Feith (piano, composition); Phil Donkin (double bass); Tobias Backhaus (drums); Theresia Philipp (alto saxophone on track 3,4,6,9,10); Joachim Lenhardt (tenor saxophone, flute on track 3,4,6,7,9,10); Philipp Brämswig (guitar, fx all, except track 7).

Rebecca Trescher Changing Perspectives.jpg

'Changing perspectives” is something that the composer and clarinetist Rebecca Trescher has always set out to do, but this is no easy task. On one hand, she has to remain immersed in the musical activity as it happens, while on the other she strives to always remain aware of external perspectives and other ways of hearing, asking herself: Is this actually working the way I imagined? What might still be missing, and what could give it a decisive touch or the necessary kick? These might at first seem to be the concerns of a control freak. But with growing development and maturity, Trescher, who was born in Tübingen and lives in Nuremburg, has learned to relinquish excessive control and has long since refined the art of letting go..' It’s Still Snowing On My Piano captures the Norwegian pianist live in concert, performing the music that has become a cherished winter ritual for audiences across generations. Bill Evans (piano); Scott LaFaro (bass); Paul Motion (drums)

Bill Evans Trio Haunted Heart.jpg

Remastered box set of studio recordings with LaFaro and Motion. 'Few musicians seemed less likely to make an impact on the New York jazz scene in the late Fifties than Bill Evans, whose introspective solos and delicate touch were far removed from what was commonly considered “hard bop.” Yet Evans was indeed heard, and quickly became one of the most influential musicians on any instrument of the last 40 years.' (album notes).

Omer Simeon - The New Orleans Clarinettist : His 48 Finest 1926 - 1958
(Prestige Recordings) - Released:  15th August 2025 [2 CDs]

Omer Simeon (clarinet) with various musicians including Jally Roll Morton, King Oliver, Jabbo Smith, Fletcher Henderson, Lionel Hampton, and others

Omer Simeon His 48 Finest.jpg

'Omer Simeon (1902-1959) was the non plus ultra of New Orleans clarinettists. In Brian Rust's words: "His brilliantly tasteful, never exhibitionist clarinet playing is the high spot of any record on which he played". The truth of this verdict is borne out by Retrospective's survey of the 48 finest recordings from a jazz giant who is relatively little-known. His debut in 31-year recording career was playing a crucial role in the all-time jazz classics of Jelly Roll Morton's Red Hot Peppers (Black Bottom Stomp, Doctor Jazz). He was Morton's preferred clarinettist, but also played with King Oliver (Every Tub), Jabbo Smith (Jazz Battle), ..... Simeon spent a decade with Hines' orchestra making vital contributions to such as Bubbling Over and Honeysuckle Rose, also playing with the orchestras of Fletcher Henderson, Lionel Hampton and Jimmie Lunceford. There were wartime classics with Kid Ory, including the poignant Blues For Jimmie, created after the death of Jimmie Noone, plus delightful trio recordings with James P. Johnson ......). His career enjoyed a later blossoming in the 50s with Wilbur De Paris' superb "New" New Orleans Jazz (7 magnificent tracks including the final live Juba Dance). From this period too we have six rare trio recordings with Simon Price and Zutty Singleton, and an irresistibly joyous Skokiaan with Simeon on soprano sax duetting with Louis Armstrong..' Tomasz StaÅ„ko – Trumpet

Scandanavian Art Ensemble Copenhagen 2.jpg

'Following the success of The Copenhagen Session Vol. 1, hailed by critics worldwide as a vital rediscovery of the late Polish trumpeter Tomasz StaÅ„ko, Scandinavian Art Ensemble now presents the second and final chapter: The Copenhagen Session Vol. 2, set for release on November 7th, 2025 on April Records. For years, whispers circulated through the jazz scenes of Denmark and Poland - rumors of a lost recording session featuring StaÅ„ko alongside a group of Scandinavian and Polish musicians. Nearly a decade after the session and seven years after his passing, these long-awaited recordings have finally emerged, capturing a master musician at his most open and adventurous. The release of Volume 1 earlier this year drew glowing reviews from across the globe. Jazzwise (UK) praised how “StaÅ„ko retains his sound identity and individuality of approach,” while All About Jazz (USA) noted that the set “illustrates his hallmark willingness to challenge himself by finding much younger musicians who could bring out new nuances of his playing.” Citizen Jazz (FR) admired “a precise art of the essential,” celebrating the music’s coherence despite its variety...... Yank Rachell - Tappin' That Thing

(Jasmine Records) - Released: 14th November 2025

Yank Rachell (mandolin, guitar, vocals) with others

Yank Rachell Tappin That Thing.jpg

'Yank Rachell was a Bluesman with a very real difference; although he could - and frequently did - play guitar, his instrument of choice was the mandolin. This compilation covers the first phase of his active musical career, between 1929 and 1941, at which point the recording careers of most Blues musicians was put on hold, following the U.S. entry into WWII. Included herein are his 1940s hits, ‘Bye-Bye Blues’ and ‘Tappin’ That Thing’. During the mid 1940s Rachell rather fell off the radar, and remained largely forgotten until his rediscovery by Blues historian Bob Koester in the early 60s, when he started playing the college-led Folk Revival circuit. This is something of a star-studded set, as his accompanying musicians on these sides include Sleepy John Estes, Joe Williams, Sonny Boy Williamson I, Alfred Elkins and Washboard Sam.' (album notes)
